Keeping the Wedding Dress Looking It's Best

11 JULY 2012 HAZEL ANDERSON

wedding wisdom wedding dress imageThis was a common question as many of my brides and grooms flew in from other parts of the world but the answer is mainly the same whether or not you are getting married at home or away.

COMMON SENSE AND HANDLE WITH CARE.

Pick up and pack your dress as late as possible and unpack as soon as you arrive at your destination. Hang it up as high as you possibly can so that it does not trail the floor.

Use a proper garment bag to fold and pack and if you are flying out for a destination wedding ask not to be separated from it i.e. carry your dress on to the plane. Airlines change their policy about carry on luggage all the time but who can resist a tearful bride at the check in desk saying that she has to be close to her wedding dress at all times!!!!!! Pack an emergency kit for the dress to include needle and thread, white cotton (if your dress is white)a lint roller and some safety pins.

DO NOT ATTEMPT TO IRON YOUR DRESS.

The steam from a bathroom will normally take cares of the majority of creases, if it does not then a professional steamer will. If you have a long train it may be worth wearing your dress beforehand to get used to climbing stairs, turning and knowing how much extra space your dress/veil and train actually take up around you as I do remember one wedding when my safety pins came in to save the day. The bride was seconds away from making her entrance when the awful tear noise happened. Dad had stood on the train and ripped it. No time for drama get the safety pins out and hide the tear between the folds of material. Oh my!!!!!! Thank goodness for those little pins they saved the day.
